Lake Waramaug is a lake of 280 ha (680 acre) area on the territory of the municipalities Warren and Washington in Litchfield County of the US state of Connecticut . It is about 39 km north of Danbury .

Names

The lake got its name from an Indian chief from the Wyantenock tribe. Sachem Waramaug and his clan used the area around Lake Waramaug as winter quarters.

description

The lake is of natural origin, but its water level has been dammed by a low concrete and stone dam. The surface of the lake takes up about 2.8 km². At its deepest point it is 12 m (40 ft) deep, with an average water depth of 7 m (22 ft), its capacity is approx. 18,000,000 m³. It is fed by the Sucker Brook (Lake Waramaug Brook), many small spring streams and groundwater that emerges from springs in the lake bed. The lake drains south into the East Aspetuck River .

The bottom of the lake consists largely of gravel and rocks, with sand and silt deposited on flat areas. The catchment area covers approximately 37 km² (14.4 square miles). Most of this area is forested. The region is sparsely populated. There aren't too many buildings on the lakeshore either, just a few summer houses, boathouses, and a few shops. Public access to the lake is only available in Lake Waramaug State Park at the northwest end of the lake.

Flora and fauna

In 1987 an inventory of the lake was published. At that time the vegetation was relatively sparse. Only along the bank and in some shallower spots were there any significant populations of aquatic plants. Including Robbins pondweed (Robbins Laikraut, Potamogeton robbinsii ), chickweed (coontail, Ceratophyllum demersum ), water lily (white-water lily, Nymphaea odorata ), arrowhead (narrow-leaved arrowhead, Sagittaria graminea ), water lilies (yellow-pond lily, Nuphar variegatum ), Marsh rushes (spike rush, Eleocharis sp.), Mermaid (bushy pondweed, Najas flexilis), broad-leaved pondweed (leafy pondweed, Potamogeton foliosus) and grass pondweed (pondweed, Potamogeton gramineus).

Fish species are largemouth bass , smallmouth bass and sunfish (calico bass), as well as lake trout , rainbow trout , yellow and white perch (Morone americana); Chain pike , alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and bullhead catfish (Ameiurus).

Regulations

From 2004 to 2008 some improvements were made for residents and boaters. The number of non-local boats has been limited to 20 per day, and any plant species brought with them must be inspected before being launched. In 2008 a new boat ramp was put into operation. In 2010, the Washington community completed extensive renovation work on the formerly inaccessible community beach. This beach is only accessible to Washington residents and their guests.
