description

illustration

The grass pondweed is a perennial herbaceous plant . It forms a 1 to 2 millimeter thick, white, branched rhizome that is often bulbous at the tip . The stem is heavily branched.

The grass pondweed is very diverse in terms of its leaf characteristics, it is heterophyllous . There are three manifestations: only with floating leaves, only with water leaves, or with swimming and water leaves. Also landforms are relatively common. The floating leaves are leathery, often arranged in rosettes and round to elliptical-egg-shaped. The water leaves are seated, translucent, pointed, 2 to 6 centimeters long and 8 millimeters wide, linear-lanceolate, often curved sickle-shaped, provided with a central stripe network and narrowed at the bottom.

The flowering time of the grass-spawning herb extends from June to August. The stem is thickened in the upper half, floriferous and fruity.

The fruits are olive brown, 1.5 to 1.5 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2 millimeters wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 52.

Occurrence

The grass pondweed is widespread in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere.

The grass pondweed is rare everywhere in Central Europe , and it has lost many of its previously known locations in the 20th century due to the amelioration of bog areas , increased mineral fertilization , the possible leaching of nutrient salts from arable land and the subsequent flushing into its residential waters in the 20th century.

The grass pondweed only thrives in clean, lime-poor , but nutrient-rich waters . The grass pondweed thrives in central Europe most often in ponds , only rarely in streams, ditches or in peat cuttings . It loves summer warmth and therefore rarely climbs above altitudes of 1500 meters in alpine waters. It is a character species of the Potamogetonetum panormitano-graminei from the Potamogetonion association. It thrives in water depths of 20-300 centimeters. In the landform, it also occurs in societies of the order Littorelletalia.
