Marcel Wilhelm Richter

Marcel Wilhelm Richter (born November 19, 1886 in Darmstadt ; † December 18, 1966 there ) was a Hessian painter and graphic artist of the 20th century.

Life

From 1900 to 1904 Marcel Richter completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter and lithographer in the "Darmstädter Hofbuchdruckerei" with Heinrich Hohmann. In 1905 he attended the arts and crafts school in Düsseldorf . In 1906 he was a student of Johann Vincenz Cissarz in Darmstadt and Stuttgart . In 1907 he was a student of Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens in the "Grand Ducal Teaching Ateliers" (art school) in Darmstadt.

After his military service from 1908 to 1910, Richter lived as a graphic artist from 1910 to 1914 in Stuttgart and Frankfurt am Main .

On August 8, 1911, he married Magdalena geb. Schäfer (born May 8, 1892 in DA-Arheilgen). The marriage remained childless.

After serving as a soldier from 19014 to 19018 in the First World War , he returned to Darmstadt in 1919. From 1919 Richter worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Darmstadt. In 1920 he founded the “Posch-Pfeil-Richter Group” with Alexander Posch and Hartmuth Pfeil , from which the “Darmstadt Group” later emerged. In 1928 Richter received a state scholarship that enabled him to stay in Paris .

An air raid on Darmstadt in 1944 destroyed his studio and large parts of his work.

In 1945 Marcel Richter became a member of the “ New Darmstadt Secession ”.

Marcel Richter was a painter of his homeland, the landscape around Darmstadt, the Odenwald and the Bergstrasse . In addition, he created still lifes which, like the landscapes , were influenced by the art of Paul Cézanne .
