The Aspetuck River , tributary of the Housatonic River , is a river in Litchfield County , Connecticut, USA . The river is divided into the East Aspetuck River , which is only 15.9 km (9.9 mi) long and has no notable tributaries, and the West Aspetuck River .

geography

The name is derived from the Algonquin expression for "river that rises in a high place".

  • East Aspetuck River:

It begins in Lake Waramaug in the Washington Borough of Washington and traverses New Preston and Northville on its course south before it joins the West Aspetuck River and shortly thereafter flows into the Housatonic River at New Milford .

  • West Aspetuck River:

The West Aspetuck River has its origin in the lakes South Spectacle Pond , North Spectacle Pond , near Kent (Connecticut) . The rivers flow on Bald Hill , first north, then turn east and flow below the Bromica Mountain to Beaman Pond . From there the stream turns south and falls in a gorge about 1 km long from about 335 m above sea level to 180 m. A few hundred meters from Lake Waramaug , the stream flows through Kent Hollow , a valley with historic farms, where a few short streams flow to it, then it runs west of Sugar Loaf Hill , Sawyer -, Bear - and Iron Hill and Mount Tom south before merging with the East Aspetuck River . With the Denman Brook and the Merryall Brook it has two right tributaries that are almost as long as the main stream. The Merryall Brook has its source in the Iron Mountain Reservation .
