- Münster , Osnabrück / Germany : The Osnabrück garrison of the British Army is dissolved. Remaining units are ordered back to the mother country.
- Stockholm / Sweden : Eight years after the first same-sex civil marriage in the world in the Netherlands is also the Swedish Parliament , the registered partnerships of homosexual couples with civil marriage equal . Same-sex couples have been allowed to adopt children in Sweden since June 2002.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The European Central Bank cuts its key interest rate by 0.25 percent to 1.25 percent. However, the financial markets and the public have expected a clearer step.
- London / United Kingdom : World financial summit of the G-20 countries to create a new world financial order.

- Baden-Baden / Germany : US President Barack Obama visits Germany as part of the NATO anniversary summit in Strasbourg , Kehl and Baden-Baden .
- Binghamton / United States : In a social center, a hostage-taker brings 20 to 40 people into his power. At least twelve people are shot.

- Hamburg / Germany : Pirates hijack a German ship off Somalia with the freighter MS Hansa Stavanger .
- Strasbourg / France : After initial resistance from Turkey , the NATO countries agree on the Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen as the new Secretary General. He is expected to take up this position on August 1, 2009.

- Chișinău / Moldova : The ruling party PCRM wins the parliamentary elections with 49.5 percent of the vote.
- Copenhagen / Denmark : The future NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen resigned as Danish Prime Minister and passes on the office to his successor Lars Løkke Rasmussen .
- Pyongyang / North Korea : The launch of a North Korean long-range missile triggers protests around the world. The missile of type Taepodong-2 to one of North Korea's information communications satellite in space have been exposed. However, US forces state that no object has entered orbit.
- Prague / Czech Republic : In a keynote address, US President Barack Obama announces concrete steps for nuclear disarmament.

- Baghdad / Iraq : At least 32 people die and over 110 others are injured in a series of car bomb explosions .
- L'Aquila / Italy : A 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook Abruzzo in central Italy . The quake occurred at 3:32 a.m. local time. 294 people are killed and 1,170 others are injured. Around 10,000 buildings are badly damaged or destroyed, leaving 24,000 people homeless. An earthquake researcher foresaw the quake using a controversial method.

- Landshut / Germany : Two people die and two other people are seriously injured in a shooting in the district court of the Lower Bavarian city. The perpetrator was in an inheritance dispute when he killed his sister-in-law and then himself.
- Lima / Peru : Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori is sentenced to 25 years in prison for deploying death squads .

- Bangkok / Thailand : Tens of thousands of supporters of the ousted former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra come together for a large rally to emphasize their demand for the resignation of the incumbent Prime Minister and the dissolution of parliament.

- Algiers / Algeria : In the presidential elections , incumbent Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika is re-elected with over 90 percent of the vote.
- Jakarta / Indonesia : parliamentary elections in Indonesia 2009
- Prague / Czech Republic : Jan Fischer , the previous head of the Czechoslovak statistical office, is appointed head of government of the Czech Republic. The technocrat is taking over the post of Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek , who was voted out in March . "His transitional cabinet is supposed to officially take over government on May 9," reports AFP. Fischer will be chairman of the European Council during the Czech Presidency , which will last until June 30, 2009.
- Tehran / Iran : President Mahmud Ahmadinejad announces the opening of an operational factory , in which uranium dioxide for fuel rods can be produced on an industrial scale . This provoked protests from Western states, who fear the military use of plutonium for nuclear weapons warheads.

- Pattaya / Thailand : Hundreds of demonstrators storm the summit of the ASEAN countries in a conference hotel. The summit is then canceled and a state of emergency is declared for a short time .

- Kloten / Switzerland : With a win in the last game of the final playoffs against Kloten Flyers , HC Davos secured the Swiss ice hockey championship for the 29th time .
- Pyongyang / North Korea : After international criticism of the North Korean missile test on April 5, the government has announced the resumption of the nuclear weapons program and ends cooperation with the IAEA .

- Port of Spain / Trinidad and Tobago : At the fifth American summit of the OAS , US President Obama speaks out in favor of a new start in relations with Cuba .
- Redwood Shores / United States : The US computer company Oracle buys Sun Microsystems .

The World Health Organization is raising the alert level to 5, one notch below the pandemic classification . In Texas , the first patient outside of Mexico dies of an infection with the H1N1 influenza A virus . There are currently 65 swine flu patients in the United States.

- Apeldoorn / Netherlands : In the Queen's Day parade, a gunman races into the crowd with a car, killing six people, himself and injuring others.
- Baku / Azerbaijan : In a terrorist attack on the State Oil Academy , 12 people are killed by a gunman and about ten others are injured before the attacker kills himself. Chess composer Məcnun Vahidov is among the dead .
- New York / United States : In the bankruptcy court of the United States, the automobile manufacturer Chrysler from Auburn Hills files for insolvency under Chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy law. The Italian group Fiat announces its entry into Chrysler.
