The Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan Dövlət Neft və Sənaye Universiteti ; English : Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry (ASUOI) ) is a university in Baku , Azerbaijan .
history
The rise of the institute is linked to the boom in Baku's oil industry. On November 10, 1887, the technical school was established in Baku.
Of the 494 students who studied at the school in 1916, only 20 were Azerbaijani . On November 14, 1920, after the invasion of the Red Army , a decree was passed establishing the polytechnic institute in Baku. In 1923, the first three students at ASOA graduated, and by 1927 that number rose to 289.
In 1934 it was renamed the Azerbaijan Institute for Industry (Az.II), engl. Azerbaijan Industrial Institute , but continued as the State Oil Academy after the end of World War II .
During the time of the Great Terror in 1940, numerous students, children of German settlers in Azerbaijan - some of them students of the Azerbaijani Institute of Industry - were arrested and interned.
At the end of World War II, there was an enormous demand for petroleum engineers in the Soviet Union, and the school trained them in large numbers. On March 21, 1992, after Azerbaijan's independence from the USSR, the university changed its name to ASOA .
In 1993 the academy changed its curriculum towards a more western model; the academy's first bachelor's and master's degrees received the newly introduced titles in 1997 . ASOA worked with Western universities, particularly Georgia State University , to modernize their programs. ASOA currently has programs with around a dozen international universities.
On April 30, 2009, there was a shooting at the State Oil Academy with 12 victims, in which the shooter was also killed. Among the victims was the chess official Məcnun Vahidov , who taught at the academy.
