history

The ASWU was originally a department of the Baku State University ; it was spun off as a separate and independent institution in 1934. Over the years its name has been changed several times and it has been amalgamated several times and separated from the State University, most recently in 1966. In 1987 the name was changed to Finance-Economic Institute; and in 2000 the name was changed to the present form by a law of the Azerbaijani government.

In 2007 a library and information center as well as a student career center were opened at ASWU. In addition, a new 7-story educational building was opened that meets the highest international standards. In the same year ASUE received the “European Quality” award and the European Club of Rectors and the European University Association .

The strategic direction of the ASUE development was to bring the educational process up to international standards by 2010, complete the international accreditation process and ensure full compliance with the Bologna process as well as more active participation in the international market for educational services. The university is currently headed by Rector Professor Adalat Muradov and five Vice Rectors.
