The French-Azerbaijani University ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan-Fransız Universiteti , French L'Université franco-azerbaïdjanaise , UFAZ ) is a university in Baku , Azerbaijan .

It was founded in 2016 on the initiative of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and French President François Hollande as a joint project of the University of Strasbourg and the Azerbaijani State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU).

The UFAZ campus is located in a historic building at Nizami küçəsi (Nizamistraße) 183 in the city center.

The university has around 70 professors and other faculty members and around 538 students.

Classes at the UFAZ are in English. The academic curriculum follows that of the University of Strasbourg and the University of Rennes 1 for the bachelor's degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering .

In order to harmonize the three-year bachelor's degree in France with the four-year bachelor's degree in Azerbaijan, the first year at UFAZ is a preparatory year . The teaching staff consists of French and Azerbaijani professors. After completing their studies , UFAZ graduates receive Azerbaijani (ASOIU) and French (University of Strasbourg or University of Rennes 1) diplomas .

The UFAZ currently has 4 subject areas at the Bachelor level: chemical engineering , geophysics , computer science , as well as oil and natural gas technology .

Most of the UFAZ students, more than 80%, are scholarship holders who receive free education due to the financial support of the Azerbaijani government .

For the 2020/2021 academic year, UFAZ will open new master’s courses in the following areas: chemical engineering / physical chemistry , geosciences and applied computer science ( big data and artificial intelligence ).
