- Berlin / Germany : The Bundeswehr's Cross of Honor for Bravery is awarded for the first time.
- London / United Kingdom : As part of an event organized by the British Library on the Codex Sinaiticus , one of the oldest almost completely preserved Bible manuscripts, the last part of this manuscript, which is kept in four locations in Europe and Africa , is made available on the Internet . The text is written in ancient Greek and users can leaf through the codex virtually.
- Moscow / Russia : The US President Barack Obama visits the Russian capital for the first time in his term of office and the Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as well as opposition leader Garry Kasparov .
- Ürümqi / China : During protests against the suppression of the Uighur population of northwest China over the weekend in the provincial capital of Xinjiang , 140 people are killed and 800 others injured. The riots began after some 3,000 demonstrators were forcibly dispersed, demanding an official investigation into the murder of two Uyghurs in late June.

- Kyūshū / Japan : In the west of Japan's largest island, at least 60 people are killed after heavy rains due to floods and landslides . 1.5 million people were asked to leave their homes. The heavy rain hit Hiroshima Prefecture the hardest .
- Los Angeles / United States : The memorial service for Michael Jackson takes place in front of 17,500 spectators in the Staples Center . The guests include Brooke Shields , Mariah Carey , Stevie Wonder , John Mayer , Jennifer Hudson , Kobe Bryant , Magic Johnson , Lionel Richie , Usher , Smokey Robinson and Jermaine Jackson .

A meeting of US President Barack Obama with Pope Benedict XVI is also planned.
