Caspian Airlines flight 7908 ( flight number : RV7908) was a scheduled flight of the Caspian Airlines company , which operated on July 15, 2009 on the route from Tehran ( Iran ) to Yerevan ( Armenia ) near the village of Jannatabad near Qazvin in northwestern Iran crashed. The plane, a fully occupied Tupolev Tu-154M , hit the ground 16 minutes after takeoff, killing all occupants, 156 passengers and 12 crew members. The Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan ordered a day of mourning for July 16, 2009.

Aircraft

The aircraft, a Tupolev Tu-154M with the official aircraft registration EP-CPG, had the production number 87A-748 and completed its maiden flight in April 1987 with the test registration CCCP-85748. The first owner of the machine was the former Afghan airline Bakhtar Afghan Airlines , which took over the aircraft on April 20, 1987 with the registration YA-TAR. A year later, Ariana Afghan Airlines bought the Tu-154. The machine kept the license plate. Ten years later, in March 1998, Caspian Airlines first leased the Tu-154, but then decided on March 15, 1998 to buy the aircraft. Until the crash, the aircraft had the aircraft registration EP-CPG. The aircraft had 168 economy class seats and was powered by three Solowjow D-30KU-154 turbines, which deliver 103 kN of thrust. One month before the accident, the machine had undergone a technical inspection by the maintenance company for Tupolev Tu-154 at Mineralnye Vody Airport (Russia), after which the operating license was extended to 2010.

the accident

Shortly after the machine started, the pilots reported fire in the left engine. The pilots were cleared for flight level 320 (around 9,800 meters), but the machine only reached FL288 (around 8,800 meters). As the radar showed, the machine then sank to 14,700 feet (around 4,500 meters) in 55 seconds. This corresponds to a rate of descent of 15,400 feet (approx. 4700 meters) per minute, which is equivalent to a dive. According to eyewitness reports, the machine circled in the air before the crash in order to attempt an emergency landing. The Tu-154 exploded on impact in a field at 11:33 a.m. local time (9:03 a.m. CEST). A crater 10 meters deep was formed at the crash site; the debris was distributed in a radius of up to 200 meters.

Passengers

In addition to the predominantly Iranian passengers, there were six Armenian and two Georgian citizens among the passengers. There were also two Australian-Iranian citizens on board. Among the dead were the entire Iranian youth judo team (eight athletes and two coaches), former member of the Iranian parliament Levon Davidian and Natela Nikonova, the wife of the Georgian ambassador to Iran. 42 of the Iranians who died belonged to the Armenian minority . Both Canadians who died - a young mother with her young son - were of Armenian descent. Overall, it was the 62nd loss of a Tupolev Tu-154, including the fifth in Iran. It was also the second worst civil aircraft accident in Iran to date.

examination

In addition to the Iranian aviation authority, which is investigating the crash, the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan announced on July 15, 2009 the formation of a government commission under the direction of Vice Prime Minister Armen Gevorgian to investigate the crash. One day after the crash, on July 16, 2009, flight recorders and the voice recorder were found, which can provide information about the cause of the accident. However, two of the three flight recorders were badly damaged in the impact, so that the tapes of these boxes were found outside the containers. Nevertheless, the investigators hope to obtain data from the tapes. In the event of problems, according to the investigative commission, the flight recorders will be sent to the manufacturer Tupolev PSC in order to receive the data.
