- Munich / Germany : Bavaria allows civil partnerships to be entered into in registry offices .
- Tehran / Iran : The first trials before the Revolutionary Court against hundreds of participants in the protests against the controversial presidential election begin, one of the defendants is the French Clotilde Reiss . In addition, the TV station Al-Alam reports that three Americans have been arrested near the border with Iraq .
- Tel Aviv / Israel : In an apparently homophobically motivated attack on a gay and lesbian youth group, a 16-year-old girl and a 26-year-old group leader are killed. At least ten other people are injured, four of them seriously; the perpetrator can escape. As a result, there are rallies by homosexual groups in Tel Aviv.

- Ziketan / China : After the outbreak of the pneumonic plague , the entire city is quarantined .

- Fallujah / Iraq : Five people are killed in a suicide attack .
- Harardheere / Somalia : Somali pirates release a Malay ship that has been captured since mid-December , ending the second longest such hostage-taking off the Somali coast.
- Herat / Afghanistan : Twelve people are killed in a bomb attack on a police convoy in the west of the country.
- Melbourne / Australia : Police thwart a terrorist attack on the country's army facilities. Five Islamic extremists who planned to raid a barracks are arrested during a raid .
- Munich / Germany : After ten years of legal tug-of-war, the former gun lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber is extradited from Canada to Germany.
- Nairobi / Kenya : President Mwai Kibaki converts the sentences of all 4,000 people sentenced to death in the country to life imprisonment; however, the death penalty is not officially abolished.
- San José de Secce / Peru : Five people are killed in a night attack on a police station in the south of the country.

- Berlin / Germany : The collapse of a roof of the Romanian Orthodox parish hall in the Westend district kills two people, including the parish priest. Five people go into shock .
- Ko Samui / Thailand : During the landing, a Bangkok Airways propeller plane with 72 people on board got out of control and collided with a building. The pilot is killed and 41 other people are injured, some seriously.
- Lillooet / Canada : Due to the persistently hot weather and the resulting drought, the forest fires in British Columbia continue to spread and thousands of people have to be evacuated.

- Bridgeville / United States : Four people are killed in a rampage in a fitness center near Pittsburgh in the US state of Pennsylvania .
- Mumbai / India : In an Indian village in the east, at least ten participants in a funeral service are killed by a lightning strike.
- South Waziristan / Pakistan : The head of the Pakistani Taliban , Baitullah Mehsud , as well as two of his relatives and seven of his bodyguards are killed in a US air strike.
- Tehran / Iran : The swearing in of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president triggers new protests from.
Thursday 6th August 2009
- Kabul / Afghanistan : 21 people are killed and six others are injured when an explosive device explodes. The bomb detonated on a roadside in the south of the country.
- Malopi / Pakistan : In the north of the country, 35 soldiers are killed in a bus accident. The coach comes off the road and falls into a river near the village.
- Nuku'alofa / Tonga : The ferry “Princess Ashika” capsizes off the coast of the country. Of the 149 people on board, 55 can be recovered alive and two dead. 93 people are missing and are believed to be dead.
- Sonthofen / Germany : A sex offender wanted nationwide turns himself in. He is strongly suspected of multiple serious sexual abuse of children, the production of child pornographic videos and their distribution.
- Washington, DC / United States : After a four-week Senate hearing , Sonia Sotomayor is appointed to the Supreme Court as the first female judge with Hispanic American roots .

- Kabul / Afghanistan : Three soldiers are killed in a Taliban attack on a NATO patrol in the south of the country. The alliance does not disclose the nationality of the victims.
- Kirkuk / Iraq : Five people are fatally wounded when a car bomb explodes in the northern Iraqi city. 32 more people are injured when the explosive charge explodes in a busy market in the northern Rahimawa district .
- Taipei / Taiwan : Typhoon Morakot reaches mainland Asia and kills at least two people shortly after it arrives .
- Vigo / Spain : The power supply collapses in the port city in the northwest of the country, after which the entire city center of the metropolis with 300,000 inhabitants is affected by the " blackout ". The cause is an explosion in a distribution station that occurs during maintenance work, and a worker suffers severe burns.
- Zambales / Philippines : landslides and floods after heavy monsoon rain kill at least six people in the north of the country.

- Helmand / Afghanistan : A British soldier is killed in a bomb explosion in the south. The number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan in August rises to 20.
- Mogadishu / Somalia : At least eight people are killed and 17 others injured in a mortar attack by Islamist rebels.
- Spain : The Basque underground organization ETA is committed to several terrorist attacks carried out last June and July, including the bomb attack on Mallorca on July 30th. A short time later, two more ETA bombs explode on the holiday island.

- Santa Cruz / United States : Forest fires in northern California drive thousands of people to flight. As a precaution, more than 2000 people are being brought to safety from the fires, which are spreading rapidly in the Santa Cruz district due to strong winds.

The Sukhoi Su-27 machines were part of the aerobatic team . She was supposed to fly at MAKS , the most important and largest show in the Russian aviation industry.

- Nazran / Russia : An explosive device detonates at the local police headquarters in the Ingushetia province . Twelve people are killed in the process.
- Peshawar / Pakistan : At least six civilians are killed and eight other people are injured in a bomb attack in the troubled Northwest Frontier Province when an explosive device hidden in a fully occupied pickup truck explodes at a gas station north of the provincial capital.
- Praia / Cape Verde : The freighter " Arctic Sea ", which has been missing for around two weeks, is seized off the island by Russian naval forces.
- Sajanogorsk / Russia : In the largest Russian hydropower plant, Sajano-Schuschenskaja GES, two downpipes burst due to an unknown cause. As a result, the machine building is flooded and partially collapses. At least seven workers die and at least another eleven people are injured.
- Stockholm / Sweden : An article in the newspaper Aftonbladet ("Abendblatt"), in which alleged organ harvesting by Israelis from killed Palestinians is described, leads to not inconsiderable diplomatic reactions on the part of the Israeli government.

- Berlin / Germany : The discus thrower Robert Harting achieved a distance of 69.43 m in the last throw at the World Athletics Championships and thus became world champion.
- Borneo / Indonesia : 25 people are killed and 13 others injured in a truck accident.
- Manila / Philippines : In fighting between Muslim rebels of the Moro National Liberation Front and government soldiers, seven rebels are killed in the west of the country.
- Viernheim / Germany : A 44-year-old detonates several explosives in Weinheim and Viernheim and then holed up in his apartment in Viernheim. After 28 hours he finally surrenders to the police. The former security guard of an ammunition depot and current plumber gave his customers' unpaid bills as a motive, and an eviction suit was filed against him. The police found significant quantities of firearms and ammunition as well as other explosive devices in his apartment.

- Helsinki / Finland : With the games Ukraine against the Netherlands and Finland against Denmark which is the tenth Women Football Championship opened.

- Gießen / Germany : In the archaeological site of Waldgirmes , a life-size, golden horse head from Roman times is discovered.
- New York / United States : A steel girder from the World Trade Center , which was destroyed on September 11, 2001 , is returning to Ground Zero after more than seven years . There it is to be set up as a symbol for the “rebirth” of the World Trade Center at the memorial for the victims of the terrorist attacks. The 58-tonne and almost twelve-meter-long part of the rubble was removed in May 2002 at the end of the clearance work and became known as the “last pillar”.

- Dresden , Erfurt , Saarbrücken / Germany : State elections are held in Saxony , Thuringia and Saarland . The CDU loses percentage of votes, in Saarland and Thuringia the share of votes falls in double digits. The incumbent Prime Minister of Thuringia Dieter Althaus announces that he will not run again as head of government. The SPD only loses votes in Saarland, it wins easily in the other two countries. The left reaches 19% in Saarland and moves into the state parliament. This means that CDU, SPD, Die Linke, FDP and the Greens are represented in all three state parliaments. In addition, there is the NPD in Saxony despite losses .
- Düsseldorf / Germany : In the North Rhine-Westphalian local elections, the CDU asserts itself as the strongest political force.
- Libreville / Gabon : Presidential elections are held after President Omar Bongo Ondimba had passed away three months earlier after 42 years in office.
- Radom / Poland : Both pilots die when a Belarusian fighter plane crashes at an air show . The Sukhoi Su-27 two-seater was used at an event around 100 kilometers south of Warsaw .
- Tokyo / Japan : In the general election that wins opposition Democratic Party of Yukio Hatoyama significantly, thereby ending the dominance of the Liberal Democratic Party of Prime Minister Taro Aso after more than 50 years.
- Yaoundé / Cameroon : When a fully occupied train derailed in the West African country, at least seven people were killed and almost 300 others injured.
