Sajanogorsk ( Russian Саяногорск ) is a city in the Republic of Khakassia ( Russia ) with 49,887 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the northern edge of the West Sayan , about 75 km south of the republic capital Abakan , on the left bank of the Yenisei . The climate is continental.
The city of Sayanogorsk is administratively directly subordinate to the republic. The city district also includes settlements of urban type Maina ( Майна , 10 km upstream 5,063 inhabitants) and Cheryomushki ( Черёмушки , 30 km upstream, 8,374 inhabitants) managed such that the total population of the administrative unit town Sajanogorsk 63326 is (calculation 2009).
history
Since the beginning of the 18th century, the village Osnachennoje ( Означенное ) existed in the place of today's town . The upstream town of Maina received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1957 when Maina reservoir and hydroelectric power station were built there on the Yenisei . The actual city was founded in connection with the start of construction of the Sajano-Schuschensk hydropower plant and the Sajan aluminum plant on November 6, 1975.

Economy and Infrastructure
The economy is determined by the Sayan aluminum plant ( Саянский алюминиевый завод ; first section of the aluminum plant, in operation since 1985) and the Khakas aluminum plant ( Хакасский алюминиевый завод) , in the second section of the aluminum plant since December 2006. Both belong to the aluminum group Rusal . In particular, the energy requirements of these plants are covered by the Sayano-Shushensk hydropower plant near Cheryomushki (the most powerful in Russia and one of the world's largest) and the considerably smaller Maina hydropower plant near Maina. There is also a construction industry in Sajanogorsk ( marble mining by Sajanmramor ), light and food industries.
Sajanogorsk and jenisseiaufwärts situated villages Maina and Cheryomushki own railway connection (freight) for 66 km from Sayanogorsk remote station Kamyschta at the " South Siberian Railway " Novokuznetsk - Abakan - Taishet .
