Ust-Abakan ( Russian Усть-Абака́н ) is an urban-type settlement in the southern Siberian Republic of Khakassia ( Russia ) with 14,578 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the steppe landscape of the Minussinsk Basin on the northern edge of the West Sayan , about 15 kilometers north of the republic capital Abakan and immediately east of the city of Chernogorsk on the left bank of the Yenisei . In contradiction to its name - ustje Abakana stands for "mouth of the Abakan" in Russian - the settlement is not located at the actual mouth of the larger Abakan tributary into the Yenisei; this is located further upstream on the eastern edge of the city of Abakan, which in turn was called Ust-Abakanskoje as a village until 1925 . However, the Yenisei and Abakan form several river arms, which, depending on the level of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir of the Yenisei, whose southern end is located here, extend up to the level of Ust-Abakan. Immediately north of the settlement, the Podkuninskije Gory ridge, which belongs to the foothills of the Sayan, rises to an altitude of 569 m.

Ust-Abakan is the administrative center of the Ust-Abakan Rajon of the same name .

history

In 1909 the villages Podkunje and Askirowski were established in the area of today's settlement.

Around 1930 several brickworks and a larger wood processing factory were built there; the resulting workers' settlement was initially called Lessosawod, literally "woodwork". On March 2, 1932, it received the status of an urban-type settlement under its current name based on the earlier name Ust-Abakanskoje of the city of Abakan and also became the administrative center of the raion of the same name.
