Prigorsk ( Russian Приго́рск ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Khakassia ( Russia ) with 2,626 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the steppe landscape about 25 km as the crow flies north-northwest of the center of the republic capital Abakan , in the valley of the Bija river, which flows into the Krasnoyarsk reservoir of the Yenisei about 10 km east .

Prigorsk belongs to the city district of Chernogorsk and is about 10 km to the north from its center. Between Chernogorsk and Prigorsk, the Podkuninskije Gory rises to almost 600  m .

history

The place was founded in the early 1980s in connection with the construction of a secret large-scale operation of the military-industrial complex of the Soviet Union as a residential area, initially for the construction workers and later for the workers of the plant to the east. It received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1986 (according to other sources in 1988). The plant later became known as the “Sibir” Combine and was supposed to be used for uranium enrichment for nuclear weaponry .

As a result of perestroika and disarmament negotiations between the Soviet Union and the United States , the work became redundant and construction stopped. In the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the associated decline of the economy, a re-profiling of the partially completed large property also failed; it was completely abandoned and fell into disrepair. The development of the place stagnated.

Economy and Infrastructure

A small part of the buildings of the partially completed Combine Sibir , which was abandoned after 1990, is now used as a prison camp; there is another south of the settlement. The settlement itself, with its prefabricated buildings, is a residential suburb for workers mainly in Chernogorsk and Abakan.

Prigorsk is on the M54 trunk road (Russia) , which connects Krasnoyarsk via Abakan with the Tuvan capital Kyzyl and the Mongolian border. There is a bus connection to Chernogorsk and Abakan on this road. At Prigorsk a regional road branches off to Sorsk, 67 km away .

A railway line for freight traffic, which was brought up in the 1980s during the construction of the Chernogorsk combine (from which there is a connection to the South Siberian Railway in Abakan), has now been dismantled.
