geography
The settlement is located between the northern edge of the Western Sayan and the Abakan Mountains , a good 90 km as the crow flies southwest of the republic capital Abakan , a few kilometers above the confluence of the Askis of the same name in the Abakan River, Yenisei .
Askis belongs to the Askis Rajon of the same name and is about 7 km to the west from its administrative center, the village also bearing the name Askis.
history
The place was created in connection with the construction of the Novokuznetsk - Abakan section of the South Siberian Railway in the 1950s. It got its name after the river and the old, nearby village. In 1958, shortly before the completion of the section and the opening of the station , Askis received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Economy and Infrastructure
The main economic factor is the Askis station on the South Siberian Railway, which was opened in 1959 and electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current in 1964 (route kilometers 288). A 70 km long branch line branches off here to the Abasa mining center , which also went into operation in 1959.
There is a road connection to the A161 highway leading from Abakan over the West Sayan to the small town of Ak-Dowurak in the west of the Tuva Republic , which runs a few kilometers east between the settlement and the village of Askis.
