The Abakan ( Russian Абакан ; of Khakas for "bear blood", according to other theories "bear flow" or "flow of the fathers" [also the Khakassians ]) is a (together with its source flow Bolschoi Abakan ) 514 km long left tributary of the upper Jenissei in the Republic of Khakassia in the south of Eastern Siberia .

General

The Abakan arises from the Bolshoi Abakan ( Big Abakan) and the Maly Abakan ( Little Abakan ) in the southwestern area of the West Sayan and flows from there in a north-easterly direction through the Minussinsk Basin to the city of Abakan , where it flows into the Krasnoyarsk reservoir of the Yenisei. On the left bank of the river, about 150 km southwest of the city of Abakan, is the small town of Abasa . The mean annual flow rate at the Raikow measuring point near the mouth is 381 m³ / s, in the month with the least water in January 49.3 m³ / s, in the month with the most water in May 1095 m³ / s. On the river, which is also used for irrigation in its lower reaches, there is logging .

The river gained international fame through the book Die Vergessenen der Taiga by Vasily Peskow about the hermit family Lykow who lived there .
