Olav Fykse Tveit (born November 24, 1960 ) is a Norwegian Lutheran theologian and pastor . He was general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) from January 2010 to April 2020 . He was elected Presiding Bishop of the Church of Norway in January 2020 and will take office in October 2020.

Career

Olav Fykse Tveit studied at the Theological College ( Menighetsfakultet ) in Oslo . In 1987 he was first field preacher before he was parish pastor in Haram from 1988-1991 . In 2002 he received his doctorate in theology in Oslo.

He has held various positions in the Church of Norway , such as Secretary of the Doctrinal Commission 1999–2000 and the Commission on Church-State Relations 2000–2001. From September 1, 2002 to the end of 2009 he was general secretary of the Church of Norway's Council for Ecumenism and International Contacts ( Mellomkirkelig råd ). Tveit represented his church in various ecumenical and interreligious bodies. At the international ecumenical level, he worked in the Faith and Order Commission and as co-chair of the WCC core group on the Palestine / Israel Ecumenical Forum. He was elected general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) on August 27, 2009, and took office in January 2010. In July 2014 he was re-elected for a second term.

In October 2019, the Bishops' Conference of the Church of Norway elected Tveit as President (Chairman Bishop). The National Council of Churches of the Church of Norway confirmed this decision in January 2020. Tveit was ordained a bishop on May 10, 2020; He will exercise his office together with his predecessor Helga Haugland Byfuglien for a transitional period until he formally takes over in October 2020.
