Life

The baptized Catholic Castro, after obtaining his university entrance qualification, studied Protestant theology in Basel , where he was influenced by the theological knowledge of Karl Barth . At the University of Lausanne , he put his dissertation before and became a doctor of theology doctorate . He served as a Methodist church pastor before serving in several Latin American and international ecumenical institutions. In 1973 he was appointed director of the World Evangelization and Mission Commission at the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Geneva . He called it a special goal of his administration to bring the South American Pentecostals into the World Council of Churches. From 1985 to 1992 he took over the office of general secretary of the WCC and shaped ecumenical work through accents that he brought in from the theology of liberation. With eloquent sermons and pronounced socio- ethical demands for a renewal of the international economy and politics, he drew attention in the churches, but also experienced sharp opposition from conservative and economically liberal circles. Under his leadership the first time, a delegation of the WCC South Africa , after the representative of the ANC , Nelson Mandela , was released from his imprisonment. The WCC had criticized the apartheid system for decades.

Even after Castro left the leadership of the WCC, he continued his activities in the ecumenical search for a more just world order. Together with Konrad Raiser , his successor in the office of General Secretary, he called an international ecumenical congress for 2006 at the Theological College of San Leopoldo on the subject of “Mission and Ecumenism in Latin America”. Noteworthy in this company was the fact that in 35 km distance from the same time in Porto Alegre . Meeting participants IX Assembly of the WCC took place.

Castro worked in the Christian Peace Conference and took part in the II All-Christian Peace Assembly in Prague in 1964 , where he was elected one of the vice-presidents . Regardless of the global political changes that have occurred since the 1990s, his work has been directed towards the implementation of a peace council of all churches, as the Council Movement for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation has been striving for for many years. For this he was also active as a journalist, spoke at congresses, appeared as an editor of liberation theological literature and supported Christians in Chile in their work to overcome the consequences of the Pinochet dictatorship.
