The Santillana District is located in the Huanta Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on December 21, 1918. The district has an area of ​​286 km². In the 2017 census, 4075 inhabitants were counted. The seat of the district administration is the village of San José de Secce at an altitude of 3262  m with 755 inhabitants (as of 2017). San José de Secce is located about 20 km north of the provincial capital Huanta .

Geographical location

The district of Santillana is located in the Andean highlands in the middle of the province of Huanta. The Río Mantaro flows north along the western district boundary. The northeast of the district is drained to the northeast via the Río Chuimacota.

The district of Santillana is bordered to the west by the districts of La Merced , Churcampa and San Pedro de Coris (all three in the province of Churcampa ), to the north by the district of Ayahuanco , to the northeast by the district of Llochegua , to the east by the district of Sivia and to the southeast and in the south to the districts of Uchuraccay and Chaca .
