The Ayahuanco district is located in the Huanta Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 20, 1955. It has an area of ​​370 km². The 2017 census counted 1260 inhabitants. The seat of the district administration is the 3414  m high village Viracochán with 392 inhabitants (as of 2017). Viracochán is 40 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Huanta .

Geographical location

The Ayahuanco district is located in the Andean highlands in the north-west of the Huanta province. The Río Mantaro flows north along the western district boundary.

The Ayahuanco district is bordered to the west by the San Pedro de Coris and Pachamarca districts (both in the Churcampa province ), to the north by the Pucacolpa district , to the east by the Llochegua district and to the southeast and south by the Santillana district .
