The Iguaín district is located in the Huanta Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on December 27, 1926. It has an area of ​​71.8 km². The 2017 census counted 2838 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1770, in 2007 it was 2697. The seat of the district administration is the 3025  m high village of Macachacra with 437 inhabitants (as of 2017). Macachacra is 7 km southeast of the provincial capital Huanta .

Geographical location

The Iguaín district is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme southwest of the Huanta Province. In the west, the district extends to the east bank of the north-flowing lower reaches of the Río Cachi . The area is drained via the Río Chinua to the west to the Río Cachi.

The Iguaín district borders in the west on the Chincho district ( Angaraes province ), in the north on the Huanta district , in the east on the Huamanguilla district and in the south on the Pacaycasa district ( Huamanga province ).
