The Huanta District is located in the Huanta Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​165 km². The 2017 census counted 41,615 inhabitants. The seat of the district and provincial administration is the 2628  m high city of Huanta with 33,304 inhabitants (as of 2017). This is just 25 km north of the regional capital Ayacucho .

Geographical location

The Huanta District is located in the Andean highlands in the south of the Huanta Province. The lower reaches of the Río Cachi flows north along the western district boundary and drains the area.

The Huanta district borders on the Chincho district ( Angaraes province ) to the west, the Luricocha , Santillana and Uchuraccay districts to the north, the Tambo district ( La Mar province ) to the east and the Iguaín district to the south .
