The Canayre district is located in the Huanta Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was formed on September 12, 2013 from parts of the Llochegua district. It has an area of ​​269 km². The 2017 census counted 3938 inhabitants. The seat of the district administration is the 507  m high village Canayre with 1597 inhabitants (as of 2017). Canayre is 77 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Huanta .

Geographical location

The Canayre district is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme northeast of the Huanta Province. The district is bordered in the north by the Río Mantaro and in the east by the Río Apurímac .

The Canayre district is bordered to the south by the district Llochegua, the west by the district Pucacolpa , on the north by the district Vizcatán del Ene ( province of Satipo ) and to the east by the district Pichari ( province of La Convención ).

In addition to the main town, the district has the following larger towns:

  • Samta Rosa (460 inhabitants)
  • Union Mantaro (420 inhabitants)
