The district of Luricocha is located in the province of Huanta in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged during the founding years of the Republic of Peru. The district has an area of 142 km². The 2017 census counted 5990 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4599, in 2007 it was 5089. The district administration is located in the 2580 m high village of Luricocha with 884 inhabitants (as of 2017). Luricocha is 5 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Huanta .
Geographical location
The Luricocha district is located in the Andean highlands in the south-west of the Huanta province. In the west, the district is bounded by the lower reaches of the Río Cachi and in the northwest by the Río Mantaro . The south of the district is drained via the Río Luricocha to the Río Cachi.
The district of Luricocha borders in the west on the districts Chincho ( Angaraes province ) and Marcas ( province Acobamba ), in the northwest on the district La Merced ( province Churcampa ), in the northeast on the district Chaca and in the east and southeast on the district Huanta .
