The district of La Merced is located in the province of Churcampa in the region of Huancavelica in the southwest of central Peru . The district was established on November 30, 1945. It has an area of ​​71.3 km². The 2017 census counted 1131 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 435, in 2007 1149. The seat of the district administration is the 2632  m high village of La Merced with 583 inhabitants. La Merced is located 6 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Churcampa .

Geographical location

The district of La Merced is located in the extreme southeast of the province of Churcampa on the western edge of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The Río Mantaro flows around the district in the south and east.

The La Merced district is bordered to the west by the San Miguel de Mayocc district , to the northwest by the Churcampa district , to the east and southeast by the Santillana and Luricocha districts (both in the Huanta province ) and to the southwest by the Marcas district ( Acobamba province) ).
