Bangkok Airways ( Thai บางกอก แอร์ เว ย ส์ ) is a Thai airline based in Bangkok and based at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport . It also operates the airports in Ko Samui , Sukhothai and Trat .
history
The history of the airline can be traced back to 1968, when it was founded under the name Sahakol Air as an air taxi company under the contract of the US construction company OICC . The airline carried out its first scheduled flights in 1986 and then renamed itself Bangkok Airways in 1989 .
In April of the same year, Bangkok Airways opened its own airport on Ko Samui , from which it offers direct flights to Phuket , Hong Kong , Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi and Singapore . In 1996, it opened its second airport, Sukhothai . In March 2003 the third airport of its own was opened to traffic, Trat Airport near the island of Ko Chang .
In 2000, the airline took over its first jet in the fleet with the Boeing 717-200 . Until then, only turboprop aircraft , especially the ATR 72, were used. In the same year, the Cambodian subsidiary of Bangkok Airways, Siem Reap Airways , started operations. In principle, the aircraft of Siem Reap Airways and Bangkok Airways are provided with the logos of the two airlines. So you could see the Bangkok Airways planes with the Siem Reap Airways logo. In 2008 the subsidiary ceased its flight operations.
Since 2004, Airbus A320-200 aircraft have also been added to the fleet; the 717 have since been decommissioned. In January 2006, an order for six long-haul Airbus A350-800 aircraft was announced. They should be used on new connections from Thailand to Europe. This order was canceled in September 2011.
Between 2004 and 2009 and 2011, Bangkok Airways won the Skytrax World Airline Award “Best Regional Airline” six times. In 2014, Bangkok Airways received the World Airline Awards “The World's Best Regional Airline 2014” and “Best Regional Airline in Asia 2014” from Skytrax .
