Bangkok Airway Flight 266 ( PG 266 for short ) was a scheduled Thai domestic flight operated by Bangkok Airways , which when landing on August 4, 2009 at around 2:10 p.m. local time, deviated from the runway and hit a control tower .

On landing at Ko Samui airport during heavy rainfall , the pilots lost control of the ATR-72-212A and hit a disused control tower from the side of the runway. Due to the force of the impact, the flight captain, who had worked for Bangkok Airways for 19 years and had 14 years of experience with the type of aircraft involved, was killed and the aircraft was destroyed. All other people on board survived, with 41 people injured. Five of them as well as the copilot who was trapped for two hours had to be treated in the hospital.

Data and trivia

  • Among the passengers were Italians, British, Spanish, Swiss, Israelis and four Germans.
  • The aircraft was only built in 2001. It has the registration HS-PGL and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127F engines.
  • Because of the accident, the two flights "TG 287" and "TG 288" of Thai Airways had to be canceled, which affected more than 200 passengers.
