Kilinochchi ( Tamil : கிளிநொச்சி Kiḷinocci [ ˈkɨɭinotːʃi ], Sinhala : කිලිනොච්චි Kilinocci [ ˈkilinotːʃi ]) is a city in northern Sri Lanka . It is located around 70 kilometers southeast of Jaffna and is the administrative seat of the Kilinochchi District of the Northern Province .
Kilinochchi is located in the Vanni region in the Tamil- populated north of Sri Lanka. The Kilinochchi area was long sparsely populated. The city of Kilinochchi was only founded in 1936 as part of a colonization program with the aim of relieving population pressure on the densely populated Jaffna Peninsula .
Kilinochchi is one of the areas claimed by Tamil separatists as part of an independent Tamil Eelam state and was affected by the civil war in Sri Lanka from 1983 to 2009 . In 1990 the rebel organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) took control of the city after the Indian peacekeeping forces withdrew . In September 1996 the government troops captured Kilinochchi, but in September 1998 the city was retaken by the LTTE and from then on served as the de facto capital of the LTTE-controlled areas. In the course of their offensive in the final phase of the civil war, the Sri Lankan army captured Kilinochchi on January 2, 2009.
The A9 highway runs through Kilinochchi from Kandy to Jaffna, the most important traffic connection to the north of Sri Lanka. Kilinochchi is connected to the railway network via the northern line of the Sri Lankan Railways . After the rail traffic was stopped as a result of the civil war in 1990, the line to Kilinochchi was reopened in September 2013.
