USA stance

In the run-up to the presidential elections in El Salvador, which will take place shortly afterwards, the US administration under Barack Obama reaffirmed its neutrality and its willingness to accept any election result. This was in contrast to the previous government under George W. Bush . In a previous election, Otto Reich's special envoy for the western hemisphere threatened bilateral relations with a deterioration in the event of an FMLN election victory.

A group of Republican US Congressmen demanded sanctions against El Salvador in the event that the Social Democratic FMLN should also win the presidency in the subsequent presidential elections in March 2009.
