The lottery numbers were drawn from September 4, 1965 to June 29, 2013 by Hessischer Rundfunk on Saturdays and broadcast on First German Television for the winning numbers of the lottery companies that are part of the German Lotto and Totoblock . Between 1982 and 2013, a program produced and broadcast by the Second German Television was also broadcast on Wednesdays , Lotto on Wednesdays . Since July 3, 2013, the “LOTTO 6aus49 drawing” has been broadcast exclusively via live streamon the Internet - on Saturdays at 7:25 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:25 p.m. - broadcast; the announcement on television takes place half an hour later, shortly before the start of the main edition of the Tagesschau or the heute news .

Organization and presentation

The broadcast of the drawing was presented by a moderator (popularly known as "Lottofee"). In other countries, for example in Switzerland, there is no moderation. The first lottery fair was Karin Dinslage , who appeared in this role on German television from September 4, 1965 . Karin Tietze-Ludwig took on the role from 1967 to 1998, but was also temporarily represented by other moderators. The sentence "The supervisory officer was convinced of the proper condition of the drawing device and the 49 balls before this broadcast" is part of German television history. Tietzes successor has been Franziska Reichenbacher since 1998 (regular substitute: Ingrid El Sigai ).

For over 40 years, little had changed in the style of the presentation. Initially, only the six lucky numbers plus the additional number were drawn and the results of Spiel 77 and Glücksspirale were only read out. Since the mid-1990s, the drawing of the winning numbers for the Lotteries Spiel 77 and Super 6 has also been broadcast. For years, especially for the numbers of Super 6 , they switched to a second recording studio, which was located at the Saarländischer Rundfunk in Saarbrücken; Today, the Super 6 winning numbers are drawn live on Saturdays in the current report broadcast on SR TV and only transmitted to Frankfurt. From 2005 to 2013, the announcer no longer only presented from several positions, but also strode across the highest television studio in Europe, on the 53rd floor of the Main Tower in Frankfurt . The drawing was accompanied by light instrumental entertainment music throughout .

The time slot in the first program was since the first broadcast in 1965, the late Saturday night against 22:15. Since this date was dependent on the punctual end of the Saturday evening shows that were often broadcast in the 1980s , it could also be significantly later. On April 3, 1993, they switched to Saturdays at 7:55 p.m. - an appointment that was also far more pleasant for the advertising industry. At the request of ARD, the broadcast date, starting with the drawing on August 8, 2009, was moved back to 10:00 p.m. However, this date varied considerably depending on the ARD broadcasting program. The broadcast was rarely recorded beforehand if the broadcast date was very late.

The live broadcast of the drawing of the lottery numbers in the first was stopped with the broadcast on June 29, 2013. Since July 6, 2013, the drawing can only be viewed via a live stream on the Internet at 7:25 p.m. The results will now only be read out by Franziska Reichenbacher shortly before the daily news at 19:57 on the “Lotto am Saturday” program. The reason for this decision is falling audience figures. With this attitude, the responsibility for the broadcast within the ARD also changes: Instead of the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt , the drawing is now produced by the Saarländischer Rundfunk in its own studio in the broadcasting center in Saarbrücken .

Lotto on Wednesday

First broadcast April 28, 1982 on ZDF

The Wednesday lotto , which was produced and broadcast from April 28, 1982 to June 26, 2013 by ZDF on behalf of the German Toto and Lotto block in the broadcasting center in Mainz-Lerchenberg , developed less of an institutional character .

The drawing originally ran on Wednesdays at 9:20 p.m., later the broadcast date was moved to the evening program. The program was used to retain viewers: the two drawings were initially not broadcast one after the other, but with an interval of about an hour. The date of draw A took place during the commercial break around 6:20 p.m., draw B took place around 7:25 p.m., according to the news today and a commercial break. For a while there was a uniform broadcast date, embedded in a commercial break in the previous evening series, around 6:20 p.m. Later, the time slot was fixed at 6:50 p.m.

For many years the program was presented by the announcer on duty for the corresponding evening program. From the abolition of the program announcement on ZDF in 2000, the previous announcer Heike Maurer led through the program until it was discontinued in 2013 (substitute: Claudia Melters ). For many years, in addition to the ZDF announcer, there was also a guest on the show who was always a familiar face from a television series, a film or a ZDF show. The show was also used for self-promotion.

The Wednesday lotto was initially a very special lottery based on the 7 out of 38 system . On June 4, 1986, the program was renamed Lotto on Wednesday and changed to the 6 out of 49 known from the Saturday Lotto , with two draws always taking place in contrast to the Saturday Lotto . Each of the two drawings initially had its own odds. From December 6, 1995, uniform odds were in place for both drawings. Since December 6, 2000, the Wednesday lotto has been converted into a continuation of the Saturday lotto . A jackpot from the Saturday drawing has since been brought back into play on Wednesdays and vice versa. In order to equate the chances of winning on Saturdays and Wednesdays, the second series of draws in the Wednesday lottery was abolished at this time.

There was a breakdown in the drawing on April 3, 2013. Two balls got stuck in the pulling device and did not fall into the drum. The error was only noticed after the drawing and this was then declared invalid. The drawing therefore had to be repeated. There had never been a breakdown like this before, but in 2010 there was a problem with the drawing device for the Saturday lottery. On May 29, 2010, the drawing device stopped immediately after the super number was drawn, so that the ball got stuck in the tube and did not fall down. Since the ball was already visibly drawn, the drawing was declared valid.

With the issue of June 26, 2013, the show was discontinued due to falling audience figures. Since July 3, 2013, the German Lotto and Totoblock has published the lottery numbers live on the Internet on Wednesday at 6:25 p.m. in the video stream. It can also be called up there at a later date. The ZDF announces the winning numbers at 6:54 pm before the “ today ” news.
