from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Oceans Day has its origins in the Earth Summit on 8 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro . Since 2009 June 8th has been celebrated by the United Nations as World Oceans Day. The oceans are seen as important for food security, health and the survival of all life, for the climate and as a critical part of the biosphere . The aim of the day is therefore to gain worldwide attention for current challenges in connection with the oceans.
