Jürgen Fried (born October 14, 1953 in Neunkirchen ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and retired Lord Mayor . D. the Saarland district town Neunkirchen.

biography

Fried grew up in his native town Neunkirchen, attended elementary school and grammar school at Krebsberg, where he passed his Abitur in 1972. From 1972 to 1974 he did his military service in Zweibrücken and Sonthofen ; he left the Bundeswehr as a lieutenant in the reserve . In 1974 he began studying law at Saarland University , which he successfully completed in 1981 with the first state examination in law. After a two-year legal traineeship, he passed the second state examination in 1983. From 1984 to 2000 he worked as a lawyer - since 1987 as an equal partner - in a law firm in Neunkirchen . From 2000 to 2009 Fried was mayor of the district town of Neunkirchen.
In addition to his work as a lawyer, Fried founded the film production company "Ruschel & Fried" in Neunkirchen in 1990, which existed until 1999. The company dedicated itself to film productions in the field of documentaries and was active until 1999. One of his film productions ("Totenblocken im Walzertakt") was shown as part of the renowned international Saarbrücken film festival " Max Ophüls Prize " in 1997.

Jürgen Fried is married to the lawyer Margrit Fried, with whom he has a daughter.

politics

Jürgen Fried has been a member of the SPD since 1983. From 1994 to 2000 he was a city councilor in Neunkirchen as a member of the SPD parliamentary group. In 2000 he was elected mayor of the district town of Neunkirchen. The focus of his political work lies in the areas of family policy, foreigner policy (development of a Neunkircher integration concept) and cultural policy (cultural development planning and city marketing). As mayor of the city of Neunkirchen, Fried dedicates himself in particular to urban development planning, in particular the continuation of a structural change from the former heavy industry in the coal and steel sector to a modern production location with services and supply facilities.

Jürgen Fried was elected Lord Mayor of the district town of Neunkirchen on June 7, 2009 with a share of 64 percent for a period of 10 years. Furthermore, Fried was unanimously elected President of the Saarland City and Community Day on November 2, 2013.

In the local elections on May 26, 2019, Fried was not up for re-election for reasons of age.

He was removed from office on September 30, 2019.

voluntary work

Fried took on a number of honorary posts in the field of sports associations in the Saarland and, in addition to his association work, was involved in his local environment. From 1986 to 1990 he was chairman of the local citizens' association and was involved in various functions in local sports clubs. From 1993 to 1999 he held the position of Vice President of the Saar Handball Association , whose President he became in 1999. He held this office until 2008, after which he was appointed honorary president of the association. Fried has been a board member of the Saarland State Sports Association since 2006.
In August 2009 Fried was re-elected President of the Saar Handball Association after the sudden and unexpected death of his successor Bernhard Gill, but he said he only wanted to be available for a transitional period. In October 2011, the previously elected Eugen Roth then succeeded him as President.
