United Nations Conference on Environment and Development

The Conference United Nations on Environment and Development ( English United Nations Conference on Environment and Development , UNCED , often referred to as the Earth Summit or Rio conference called) was in on 3 to 14 June 1992 Rio de Janeiro instead. It is considered a milestone in the integration of environmental and development efforts and was the first major international conference to discuss environmental issues in a global context since the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm (1972).

The Earth Summit also set new standards with regard to the participation of civil society organizations in international processes. A total of 2,400 representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) took part in the conference, and a further 17,000 people took part in the parallel NGO forum.

Important results of UNCED are Agenda 21 , the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development , the Framework Convention on Climate Change , the “Forest Principles” and the Biodiversity Convention .

In the follow-up process of the Rio Conference was the Commission on Sustainable Development (Commission on Sustainable Development, CSD) established to monitor the implementation process of the conference results.

Follow-up conferences were the Rio + 5 conference in New York in 1997 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 . From June 20-22, 2012, another summit meeting, Rio + 20 , took place in Brazil under the title United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development .

One event at the conference was Severn Suzuki's speech to the panel, trying to highlight the importance of a green and sustainable world to the development of the children of her generation.
