The Canadian Championship was played for the first time in 2008. The tournament took place from May 27, 2008 to July 22, 2008 in league format. Each team competes once at home and once away against the other two participants.

The field of participants in the first edition of the tournament consisted of Montreal Impact ( USL1 ), Toronto FC ( MLS ) and the Vancouver Whitecaps (USL1).

Montreal Impact won this tournament and therefore took part in the first CONCACAF Champions League . There they were entitled to participate in the qualification.
