Club career

Vélez first played youth football in Puerto Rico before joining the Bolletieri (IMG) Soccer Academy when he was in high school. He then stayed in Florida and moved to Barry University, where he played in the university team from 1999 to 2001.

In 2003 the MetroStars from New York City drafted the Major League Soccer SuperDraft. But he decided to join the Seattle Sounders in the USL First Division , which was then called the A-League. In the 2003 season, Vélez still played in the storm before he took a position in the defense again in 2004. This season he was also in the final with his team.

In 2005 he moved back to Puerto Rico for Puerto Rico Islanders FC , who also played in USL1. He became the captain of the team.

Since the 2008 season he has been playing for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer and was able to assert himself as a regular player.

National team

In January 2008, he was called up to the national soccer team of Puerto Rico and was appointed captain by coach Colin Clarke .
