Marcus Warren Haber (born January 11, 1989 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian football player on the position of a striker . He currently plays for Dundee FC in the Scottish Premiership .

Career

Career start at home

Haber began his active football career in 1994 with the Dunbar Soccer Association in Dunbar-Southlands , a district of his hometown Vancouver. In the following years he went through several youth leagues before he moved to the Vancouver Selects in 2002 as an 11-year-old . There he was in the U-14 to U-18 teams and won the Canadian National Championship in Mount Pearl in October 2005 with the U-16 team .

In the same year he was named Young Player of the Year by the British Columbia Soccer Association (BCSA) . Only a year later, he received this award again. In 2006, Haber worked for BCSA / Whitecaps U-17 Prospects in the Super Y-League , the highest North American youth division. At the same time he completed five championship games for the Vancouver Whitecaps Reserve , scoring seven goals. At the time, the Vancouver Whitecaps Reserve were still playing in the Pacific Coast Soccer League , one of three parallel seasons that together form the fourth division in North American football.

As a teenager in the Netherlands and trial training in England

In 2006 the 1.91 m tall striker received an offer from the Dutch club FC Groningen , which brought the young Canadian into the club's U-19 team in July 2006. Mainly because of his move to Europe , Haber was awarded the BC Premier's Athletic Award in 2007 . After 20 games and two goals for the U-19 team of FC Groningen in the first season, Haber scored seven goals in just as many appearances in the following season. Among other things, he was also in four games for the Groningen reserve team during this time.

Shortly before FC Groningen fired him in the summer of 2008, Haber tried his luck in England , where he did trial training at various professional clubs. In the following months he played for Leeds United , Hartlepool United and Gillingham FC , but received none of the three clubs a contract offer and returned to his hometown of Vancouver.

Return to the Homeland

A few months after his return, the young attacker signed a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps on February 11, 2009 , which at the time was still in the USL First Division (USL-1), the second-highest division in North American football. In addition to Haber, Wes Knight was also signed by the club's management on this day . Unlike him, Haber was given a one-year contract with an option for another year. Back home, Haber became a crowd favorite and was voted the team's newcomer of the year and fan favorite at the end of the season .

At the end of the season, the 191 cm tall striker was one of seven USL-1 players who played in all 30 championship games. With his teammate Jay Nolly , another club member of the Vancouver Whitecaps managed to be in all 30 league games. Haber scored his first goal at the new club on April 18, 2009 in a 1: 2 away defeat against Puerto Rico Islanders FC . With this goal, the then 20-year-old was elected to the Team of the Week in the second week of the game . Haber was also in action at the Canadian Championship 2009 , scoring a 2-0 away win after just 33 seconds to take the lead 1-0, which was also the fastest goal ever to score in a Canadian Championship match has been.

After good performance in the league, Haber and his teammate, defender Lyle Martin , were elected to the Team of the Week again in the 14th week (mid-July) . On October 9, 2009, Haber was finally elected the league's internal rookie of the year . The following day he scored one of his best goals in the Whitecaps dress in the first leg of the playoff final game against Montreal Impact when he headed the ball into the goal; the game was lost, however, 2: 3. After the second leg was also lost 3-1, the team around Marcus Haber could still call themselves runner-up in the USL First Division. In total, he was in 30 league games throughout the season, scored eight goals and gave four assists.

Change to the "Baggies"

From November 25, 2009 Haber took part in a four-day trial session at the English club West Bromwich Albion . On January 6, 2010, confirmed that Haber was signed by West Brom. At West Bromich Albion, the native Canadian was numbered 40; his contract is valid for 18 months and he has an option for an additional year.

After only two appearances in the reserve team, Haber signed on February 18, 2010 a one-month loan deal with English third division club Exeter City . After he came to five league appearances for the League One club in one month, he returned to his native country in early April 2010. In order to collect match practice, he returned to the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 9 for two months as a loan player. In 2010, the Whitecaps had their game operations in the newly founded USSF Division 2 Professional League (D2 Pro League), which existed for only one season .

On July 30, 2010 Haber was awarded to the Scottish first division club FC St. Johnstone for the entire 2010/11 season. He scored his first goal for the Saints on September 21, 2010 against Queen of the South in the Scottish League Cup. His first league goal followed shortly afterwards in a game against Hibernian Edinburgh. A month later he injured his knee and had an operation on November 29, 2010.

International

Haber made his first international appearance on December 29, 2004, when he played in an unofficial youth match against the USA; Another two unofficial games against Scotland followed in mid-April 2005. For his first official international appearance, the young striker came on May 17, 2005 in a game against the Honduras U-17 national team. In the days that followed, two more missions and one hit followed; all three games were part of the 2005 CONCACAF U-17 Gold Cup .

From 2006 Haber was in the squad of the Canadian U-20 team with which he also took part in the 2007 Junior World Cup in his own country. However, the team was eliminated from the current competition in the group stage of Group A as bottom group. It is worth mentioning that he was in the same group as the U-20 national team from Austria. He also took part with the same team in the CONCACAF U-20 Gold Cup 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago . Overall, he was used in 20 U-20 internationals from 2006 to 2009, but remained without scoring.

In 2008 Haber played in the qualification for participation in the soccer tournament during the 2008 Olympic Games and so came to three short appearances .

His first international match for the Canadian national soccer team was against Ukraine on October 8, 2010.
