Kevin Harmse (born July 4, 1984 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is a Canadian football player .

Club career

Harmse was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, but grew up in Coquitlam, British Columbia . In 2002 he was from the USL First Division franchise Vancouver Whitecaps drafted , but signed a contract with the club, but instead attended tryouts in Europe, including Bayern Munich and Benfica Lisbon. In early 2003 he signed a contract with the Norwegian club Tromsø IL , but for which he only came to two premier league appearances until his departure at the end of the year.

In 2004 he returned to Canada and played for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the USL First Division for two years . After the end of the 2005 season he went for a trial training session with the Slovak first division club FC Nitra , where he sustained a serious knee injury that forced him to take a break of several months. In the summer of 2006, the move to Nitra came about, but Harmse had his contract with Nitra terminated after only six months due to difficulties in adjusting.

In 2007 he signed a contract in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy after completing the pre-season with the team, and came to the team around superstar David Beckham to 17 appearances. In early 2008, he moved to Toronto FC in exchange for Toronto's four-round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft . In 2009 he won the Canadian Championship with Toronto and thus helped the team to participate in the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time . At the end of June 2009, he moved to league rivals CD Chivas USA against payment of a transfer fee , but was not used until the end of the season. On January 21, Chivas gave Harmse in exchange for a pick at the MLS SuperDraft 2012 to Houston Dynamo , due to an injury he could not contest the pre-season there and was armed on March 9, 2010.

On March 25, 2011 Harmse was signed by the Vancouver Whitecaps . After three appearances in Major League Soccer, he was released on June 10th.

On December 13, 2011, he moved to the North American Soccer League for the San Antonio Scorpions .

National team

Harmse qualified in 2002 with the Canadian U-20 selection for the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. He played in all five games in the World Cup finals, the tournament ended for the Canadian team in the quarter-finals when they lost 2-1 to the Spanish juniors after extra time. In 2004 Harmse was part of the U-23 squad at the qualifying tournament for the 2004 Olympic Games. The Canadian team missed qualifying early on when they were eliminated in the preliminary round.

In March 2007, the defensively versatile player made his debut in the Canadian national team in a friendly against Bermuda . Three months later he took part with the national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2007 , Harmse made three appearances in the group phase when Canada reached the semi-finals.
