Border crossing in shirts

Hemden is a rural district of Bocholt in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until it was incorporated on January 1, 1975, Hemden was an independent municipality in the Liedern-Werth district .

location

Hemden is located between the German-Dutch border ( Aalten -Heurne) in the north, the Stenern district in the east, the Holtwick district in the south and the Spork district in the west.

history

Archaeological finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. The community, which in 1951 covered an area of 12.96 km², emerged from a peasantry. In 1662 it had 169 inhabitants. Between 1818 and 1950, the number of people living in Shirts rose from 437 to 823. For a long time, the settlement of Shirts consisted mainly of individual farmsteads, before smaller contiguous residential areas emerged on Alte Aaltener Strasse and the border crossing on Hamalandstrasse in the 20th century .

In 1674, the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen , had the Holy Cross Chapel built as a mission station for Dutch Catholics , an octagon made of wood that was expanded to include a rectangular building between 1710 and 1714. After religious freedom was introduced in the Netherlands at the end of the 18th century, the chapel became dispensable and demolished in 1823. A baroque stone cross reminds of their location.
