After his apprenticeship with Crispin de Passe d. Ä. (also: Crispijn van de Passe ) and other Dutch artists, Isselburg worked in his hometown of Cologne from at least 1606. In 1612 he moved to Nuremberg, a stronghold of the copper engraving trade. In the following years he created a. a. Portraits of Nuremberg patricians and Altdorf scholars , but also numerous religious and profane masterpieces. Isselburg is also known for its city views.

In 1622, however, Isselburg was seriously warned by the Nuremberg city administration because of the stinging of diatribes , which is why he soon went to Bamberg and worked there as a printer from 1623 to 1625. In 1626 he moved on to Coburg . He did not return to Nuremberg until 1630, where he died that same year.

In these 25 years or so he created around 430 copper engravings and was considered one of the most important engravers of his time in Germany.

In 1620 and 1621 he was the teacher of Joachim von Sandrart (1606–1688). Even Hans Troschel d. J. (1585–1628) was one of his students.
