The DRU Cultuurfabriek (different spellings; until December 2010: DRU-fabriek or Drufabriek ) is the most important cultural center in the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek in the east of the Netherlands. The “Kulturfabrik” in the north-west of the village of Ulft is located directly on the Alte Issel river .

Buildings of the former Diepenbrock en Reigers te Ulft (DRU) ironworks were used . The buildings are state-protected architectural monuments. The entire complex also includes the buildings of the Beltman complex, which are now used for apartments (with the water tower that can be seen from afar) as well as the so-called lofts , but also the SSP-hal, which is partially used for events. For some buildings there is still no permanent re-use.

history

In June 2010, Dutch soldiers built a Bailey Bridge over the Alte Issel.

In 1754 the Count von Bergh built an iron foundry, the Olde Hut, on what would later become the DRU site . It is one of the few places in the Netherlands where iron ore was ever found. The iron foundry, which mainly produced cannon balls and stove tops, was taken over in 1774 by the mayor Diepenbrock and the pharmacist Reigers. The abbreviation DRU is derived from Diepenbrock en Reigers te Ulft .

In addition to windows and grilles, the DRU mainly produced enamel , which became known nationwide. The production of auto parts and stainless steel products was added later. Bathtubs were also made.

From 1874, engineer FB van Deurvorst headed the DRU, increased the number of employees from 400 to 700, opened up an international market and enlarged the building complex. The current buildings date from this period.

At the end of the 1990s, however, the economically ailing DRU had to merge into the international Kendrion group. In 2003 it closed. Some of the temporarily up to 1,800 employees were placed in Ulft's newer industrial operations.

In 2003 the council of the then community of Gendringen (which merged into the new community of Oude IJsselstreek in 2005) published a plan to move the library and the community house (De Smeltkroes) from the village center of Ulft to the DRU site. The final Council decision was made in 2006.

In 2009 part of the former DRU building was renovated and opened as a cultuurfabriek . Because of the high costs that will arise in the coming years, the use is not undisputed in the community. At the end of 2010 the still existing company DRU Verwarming bv (based in Duiven ) reached an agreement that the Kulturfabrik changed its name from DRU fabriek to DRU cultuurfabriek . The company feared that the negative headlines about the Kulturfabrik's funding problems would damage the company's image. According to a report in the regional newspaper De Gelderlander published in May 2011, independent experts had already called the ambitious plans unrealistic from an economic point of view in 2008.

Establishment and offer

Old water tower of the Beltman complex in the north of the DRU site.

When it opened in 2009, the main focus was on the Portiersgebouw , which is closest to the Ulft village center. There you will find a gallery, a department of the vocational ROC of the region, the Ulft library, a restaurant, a theater and a poppodium . Local groups as well as nationally known artists perform in the theater, and it is also used for the communal cinema. On the ground floor the entrance hall is a restaurant set up, the Schaftlokaal ( companies , "feed"), which mainly works with catering students.

In an archaeological investigation, the remains of an ironworks with a water mill from the 16th century were found on the DRU site. A temporary exhibition in the former slijterij deals with the local production history. The northern part of the site is used to expand the housing supply in the community. In Beltmancomplex (named after the then architects) also offices and studios were established. There are further plans to expand the former DRU site, including the establishment of a Dutch iron museum, as well as for the site on the opposite bank of the Alte Issel .

The municipality of Oude IJsselstreek has its municipal council meetings and other gatherings in the conference hall of the DRU. In September 2010 the annual meeting of the Ring of European Blacksmithing Cities took place in the DRU .
