The Lünten fish ponds are a nature reserve of around 100 hectares in the urban area of Vreden in the Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
Location, ecology
The Lünten fish ponds are located in Lünten , a village near Vreden in the Münsterland district of Borken . They were originally a dammed heather pond. Intensive fish farming was carried out here until 1952. The ponds were placed under protection in 1958.
The nature reserve is located directly on the German-Dutch border. In the extensive pine forests, remnants of the former moor and heathland have been preserved. There are even some old juniper trees here . Many rare plant species can be found in the heather pond, examples being the swamp St. John's wort , the swamp bear moss and the small water hose . The pond is also the habitat of many animal species. The teal and the little grebe live here.
The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Moore and Heiden des western Münsterland ".
tourism
On the western edge of the larger pond there is a small viewing platform ( map ), from which you have a good view over the pond and the shore area. A boardwalk leads through the nature reserve, but it is not allowed to cycle on it.
The Lünten fish ponds are connected to the NRW cycle traffic network (Waben 55 and 261). The Flamingo Route also passes here, a themed route in the Münsterland cycling region . The Lünten fish ponds are still on the cross-border cycle route 8-er de grens . Junction 99 and thus the connection to the Dutch junction system is located northwest of the nature reserve directly on the Dutch-German border.
A little further to the west are the two nature reserves Lüntener Wald and Ammeloer Venn .
