The Lünten Forest is a 110 hectare nature reserve in the urban area of Vreden in the Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Location, ecology

The Lünten forest is located between Ammeloe and Lünten in the Münsterland district of Borken . In this larger forest area, remnants of the former moor and heathland have been preserved. The forest is criss-crossed by several, sometimes very deep, drainage ditches and is dominated by pine trees. Broom and bell heather also grows here . The forest is the habitat of many animal species, for example the moor frog lives here.

South of the nature reserve is the area of a former ammunition depot for the German armed forces . It has been owned by DBU Naturerbe GmbH since 2016 . The area is to be converted back into a near-natural forest in the long term through targeted forest conversion and natural development. Due to its long-term use as an ammunition depot, many species sensitive to disturbance have settled here. The area is fenced and not open to the public for security reasons.

The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Moore and Heiden des western Münsterland ".

tourism

The Lünten forest is connected to the NRW cycle network (Wabe 55). The Flamingo Route also passes here, a themed route in the Münsterland cycling region . The Lünten forest is still on the cross-border bike route 8-er de grens . Junction 99 and thus the connection to the Dutch junction system is located northeast of the nature reserve directly on the Dutch-German border.

To the west of the Lünten Forest is the Ammeloer Venn nature reserve , directly to the east is the Lüntener Fischteiche nature reserve .
