Pachylia is a genus of butterflies from the family of swarmers (Sphingidae).

features

The genus includes large, brown colored butterflies. Their forewings have a noticeable discal spot, the outer edge of the wing is clearly convex and the anal angle is relatively acute.

The eggs are light green and have the shape typical of the family. The caterpillars are strongly built, the anal horn is greatly reduced. The pupae have a smooth, shiny, walnut-brown shell with an overgrown trunk sheath.

Occurrence and way of life

The area of ​​the genus is neotropical , it is widespread in South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean . Only Pachylia ficus is also found in North America. The caterpillars of all species feed on the mulberry family (Moraceae). The pupation takes place in a chamber in the ground.
