Sythen Castle

Sythen Castle is a moated castle in the Sythen district of Haltern am See .

The castle at that time was first mentioned in 758 under King Pippin . In the course of time, various noble families lived on the site. From 1821 to 1965 Sythen Castle was owned by the von Westerholt and Gysenberg family.

In 1946 the castle was leased to the Recklinghausen Caritas Association , which set up a children's rest home here, and sold to the association in 1970. The association had the manor house demolished in 1971 and sold the facility to Winfried Humberg in 1979 , who sold it to the city of Haltern in 1989.

Originally preserved are the gatehouse and the former chapel with a remarkable cross vault. Today the facility is part of public life after much civic engagement.
