The Haltern Reservoir (officially: Stevertalsperre Haltern or Talsperre Haltern ) is a reservoir near Haltern am See . It was built from 1927 to 1930, holds 20.5 million cubic meters of water and belongs to Gelsenwasser AG . The Stever and the Halterner Mühlenbach are dammed .

The length of the dam is 1,300 meters and the height is 8.9 meters. The overflow structure is a 130 meter long weir . Originally the reservoir was much smaller with four million cubic meters of content; it was expanded to 20.5 million cubic meters by 1972. The reservoir consists of two sub-basins, the north and south basins. In the north basin there is an island about 30 hectares in size  .

Nearby, about two kilometers above the Stever River, is the Hullern Dam .

The dam is a drinking water dam and supplies more than a million people in the western Münsterland and northern Ruhr area with drinking water through the Haltern waterworks . The water is not taken directly, but as infiltrated and filtered groundwater . Therefore leisure activities are allowed on the reservoir. The 8.3-kilometer circular route around the lake is widely used by walkers and joggers.

Water sports are only allowed in the north basin. In addition to the Haltern seaside resort with an 800 meter long sandy beach for bathers, sailing is also possible. There are several sailing clubs there. Surfing is no longer permitted on the lake, but this can be done on the Silbersee II. This is also where the TuS Haltern 's surfing department is based. There are trips across the lake with an excursion boat called Möwe . There are boat rentals for pedalos and rowing boats on the lake itself and a little above the Steverwehr, but rowing boats can be negotiated using a ramp. Various campsites and restaurants can be found in the immediate vicinity of the Haltern reservoir .

Motorized boats are not allowed to be driven on the Haltern Reservoir. Exceptions are the mentioned passenger ship Möwe , boats of the operator Gelsenwasser AG and the motor boats of the DLRG .
