The Venner Moor is a former high moor west of the Davert near the village of Venne ( municipality of Senden , district of Coesfeld , North Rhine-Westphalia ) between Lippe and Ems , directly on the Dortmund-Ems Canal . The total area is about 148 hectares. It is designated as a nature reserve and a protected area in terms of the Habitats Directive .
Condition and vegetation
This rain bog was largely peeled off . In the center there are forest-free remains of the former peat body. Here there are four large, now water-filled peat cuttings, in which a reluctant renaturation process is taking place. The rest of the area is now largely forested with birch and pine trees.
Rare species
Several endangered animal species are native to the area, one of the last known occurrences of the mole cricket in North Rhine-Westphalia is in the bog . There are also various types of dragonflies, such as the peat damsel and the Nordic moss damsel . Also in the area you can find goat milkers , tree falcons , middle and black woodpeckers , wood sandpipers , little grebes and the teal . The area is known for the occurrence of the poisonous, but very shy adder . The Greenland Porst ( Ledum groenlandicum ) has long been naturalized in the Venner Moor .
Development
In terms of tourism, the protected area is made accessible by cycling / hiking trails, which lead to considerable pollution. There are two parking spaces in the outskirts. Due to the unique landscape, numerous tours through the Venner Moor are offered on a regular basis. For many years a nursery used the peaty soil in the northeastern part of the moor birch forest as a tree nursery, especially for rhododendrons . After this use was abandoned in the 1980s, many of these non-indigenous trees remained in the nature reserve.
Others
A Venner Moor nature reserve of the same name is located near Venne (Ostercappeln) in Lower Saxony.
The historical novels Der Moorkönig (Berlin 1999) and The Return of the Moorkönig (Berlin 2010) by the German author Eva Maaser take their starting point in the landscape of the Venner Moors.
In 2002, scenes from the first crime scene in Münster were created on the Venner Moor: The dark spot . A bog body was discovered here in the film.
