Torsten Capelle

Hans Torsten Capelle (born October 11, 1939 in Hamburg ; † July 9, 2014 in Altenberge ) was a German prehistoric and early historian .

Torsten Capelle grew up in a German-Swedish family, in 1960 he passed his Abitur at the Stormarn School in Ahrensburg . He then studied Prehistory and Early History, Old Norse Philology and Medieval History at the universities in Hamburg, Uppsala, Tübingen and Göttingen. In 1966 he received his doctorate at the University of Göttingen with a thesis The metal jewelry from Haithabu . Immediately afterwards, he took up a position as a research assistant at the University of Münster in the Department of Prehistory and Protohistory. In 1969 he was with a thesis studies on elbgermanische cemeteries in the outgoing Latènezeit and the early Roman Empire in Münster habilitation , 1970 appointed associate professor at the University of Münster, 1972 appointed Professor of Prehistory and Early History. Capelle taught at the University of Münster until his retirement in 2005. His focus areas include the archeology of the early Middle Ages and the Viking Age, as well as issues relating to the history of religion.

As a specialist advisor and permanent employee at the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde , he wrote a total of around 100 articles. From 2005 to 2011 he was chairman of the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia . Capelle was an honorary doctorate from Lund University and a first class knight of the Royal Swedish North Star Order .
