Petrovaradin
Petrovaradin ( Serbian - Cyrillic Петроварадин ; German : Peterwardein ) or Fortress of Novi Sad has been a district of Novi Sad in Serbia since 1945 and is connected to it by the Varadin Bridge .
history
In the battle of Peterwardein on August 5, 1716, Prince Eugene of Savoy and 80,000 imperial men defeated a 150,000-strong Ottoman army here. On February 1, 1748, the place with then 4,620 inhabitants was raised to the imperial free city .
fortress
The fortress Petrovaradin was the largest fortress in Europe in the 17th century. At the same time it was the most important fortress of the Habsburg Monarchy in the Balkans . It was built between 1692 and 1780, based on a type of fortress developed by the French fortress builder Sébastien Le Prêtre de Vauban . It extends over an area of 112 hectares , including a unique system of underground passages under the fortress with a length of 16 km. The fortress is also equipped with 5 gates, 12,000 loopholes and locations for 400 field cannons. It is considered to be Petrovaradin's landmark . Since 2001, one of the largest music festivals in Southeast Europe , the Exit , has been held in the fortress every July .

In Petrovaradin, the Ban of Croatia Josip Jelačić Bužimski was born on October 16, 1801 , and the Austrian lawyer Karl Wolff was born on February 11, 1890 .
The Austrian actor Anton Freiherr von Klesheim was born on February 9, 1812 in Peterwardein as the son of an Austro-Hungarian officer.
