Ludwig Georg Leopold Franz Spangenberg since 1871 von Spangenberg (born May 24, 1826 in Fulda , † January 19, 1896 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Louis was the son of the Hessian Major General George Spangenberg (1789-1850) and his wife Dorothea, nee Molter (1806-1883).

Military career

In his youth Spangenberg first attended grammar school and then the cadet school in Kassel. Then on June 17, 1844, he was transferred to the hunter battalion of the Kurhessische Army as portepeefähnrich and promoted there to secondary lieutenant on September 14, 1844 . As Prime Lieutenant , Spangenberg was a member of the commission for testing infantry weapons from mid-November 1857 to mid-February 1860. Then he was promoted to captain in the 2nd infantry regiment "Landgraf Wilhelm". Shortly thereafter, on July 22, 1860, he was transferred to the Hessian General Staff, to which he was to belong for the next six years. In the war against Prussia in 1866, Spangenberg was involved in the enclosure of Mainz and after the Peace of Prague joined Prussian services .

Here Spangenberg was assigned to the General Staff as Major on February 16, 1867 and from June 7, 1867 to May 26, 1868 to the General Staff of III. Army Corps commands. On March 16, 1869, when he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion of Infantry Regiment No. 25, he resigned from service. The following year Spangenberg took over the fusilier battalion with which he fought during the war against France at Belfort and the battles at Gebweiler , Pesmes , Villersexel , Arcey , Clerval , St. Juan d'Adam, Orsans and Pontarlier . For his achievements he was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and on June 16, 1871 by King Wilhelm I elevated to the hereditary Prussian nobility .

After Spangenberg had become lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1872 , he was entrusted with the command of the Holstein Infantry Regiment No. 85 on May 28, 1874 and finally appointed regimental commander on June 9, 1874. In this position he was promoted to colonel on September 19, 1874 . Spangenberg gave up the regiment on July 9, 1880 and was then promoted to major general commander of the 28th Infantry Brigade stationed in Düsseldorf . On January 14, 1883, Spangenberg was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, Second Class with Oak Leaves, for his services in the command of the troops, and was transferred to Berlin as a commander at the end of the year . As lieutenant general , he finally became commander of the 12th division in Neisse on November 24, 1885 . From this position, Spangenberg was released on November 5, 1888, under award of the Crown , First Class with board for disposition made.

On September 19, 1891, Spangenberg received the character of General of the Infantry and, in recognition of his many years of service, on January 9, 1896, the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves.

Spangenberg married Sophie von Kutzleben (1835-1859) on April 28, 1858 in Wommen . After her death, he married Charlotte von Schmid (1840–1885) in Kassel on March 30, 1863. The following children emerged from the marriages:
