Bernhard von Werder

Bernhard Franz Wilhelm von Werder (born February 27, 1823 in Potsdam , † March 19, 1907 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general , military officer at the Russian court and German ambassador.

Bernhard came from the aristocratic family von Werder (Mark) and was the son of the general of the infantry and commanding general of the 1st Army Corps, Franz Karl von Werder .

Military career

On August 9, 1840, Werder joined the 1st Guard Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant coming from the Cadet Corps . As a prime lieutenant and captain , he was adjutant for a long time , first with the training infantry battalion, then with the 1st Guard Infantry Brigade . On October 3, 1857 for services to King Frederick William IV. Commanded, he was New Year 1858 aide- appointed. In 1859 he became a major and was entrusted with the leadership of the Guard Jäger battalion . In 1864, shortly before the outbreak of war with Denmark, he was given command of the Guard Fusilier Regiment and his promotion to colonel for the duration of the mobile relationship .

In the German War of 1866 he also commanded the Guard Fusilier Regiment and at the head of this regiment had such an outstanding role in the campaign in Bohemia that King Wilhelm awarded him the order Pour le Mérite on September 17, 1866 .

On November 7, 1869 he was appointed military plenipotentiary in Saint Petersburg and remained in this position for almost 17 years until 1886. In this capacity, he took part in the Russian-Turkish War at the Great Headquarters . Werder was promoted to lieutenant general during his stay in St. Petersburg in 1875 and was appointed adjutant general on March 22, 1876 . Eight years later he was promoted to general of the infantry.

In August 1886 Werder became governor of Berlin . After the death of Kaiser Wilhelm he entered on March 22, 1888 as adjutant general to Friedrich III. over. On September 19, 1888, Werder was placed at the disposition with a pension and at the same time à la suite of the Guard Fusilier Regiment, while leaving his position as adjutant general. He then lived mostly in Berlin, but was a guest of Tsar Alexander III for several weeks every year . in St. Petersburg.

In December 1892, at the express request of the tsar, he was appointed ambassador to the Russian court with an annual service income of 150,000 marks. From this post he was dismissed on January 18, 1901 and appointed as the successor to the late Field Marshal Graf von Blumenthal as head of the Reitende Feldjägerkorps . To celebrate his 80th birthday, the Kaiser awarded him the Grand Commander of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern on February 26, 1903 . Werder died on March 19, 1907 in Berlin and was buried in the Invalidenfriedhof .
